As my stalkers were in town pre Lee Evans comedy show and they came into Liverpool Street I took the opportunity to take them to DF Mexico at the back of the Old Truman Brewery on Hanbury Street. I’ve been dying to go here since they launched and finally I’ve made it!!
DF stands for District Federal – i.e. what the locals call Mexico City. This new venture is from the same people as Wahaca, but the vibe is quite a bit different. There is a long communal table you can join if eating solo and you order your meal off a screen (or person) by the bar. They deliver alcoholic drinks, such as the raspberry and hibiscus frozen margaritas to your table. The non alcoholic drinks such as the aquas frescas you get a glass for and refill from the stand to your hearts content (they are bottomless!)
The food isn’t quite the street food Wahaca is known for – the menu is briefer and includes burritos, tacos and the DIY Mexican board with all the usual accompaniments you’re used to from Wahaca:
The food was great and we demolished it quickly – I’ll be back for a rerun next time I’m near Brick Lane & Spitalfields!
After we had our fill of margaritas and Mexican food I took Lucy and Matt down to the gin pub – the Oliver Conquest on Leman Street.
We each tried a different gin to show them the versatility of the spirit. This was particularly a challenge to find one Matt would like – it not really being his drink. Lo and behold he loved the gin aged in rum barrels served with ginger ale! Lucy enjoyed her fruity berry Brockmans also. If you are needing ginspiration the staff are happy to advise you on which one (or several) of their 220 gins you should try!
