The lovely Sara at the Oliver Conquest gave me a copy of this book – Gin Glorious Gin, How Mother’s Ruin Became the Spirit of London. Immediately you can see what the attraction would be for me!
Recently published, written by Olivia Williams, it’s a comprehensive history of gin, right up to the modern day.
I enjoyed reading about the historic companies that have made it back recently and the original recipes that have been resurrected, such as the Tanqueray Malacca limited run in 2012. It gives a new meaning to limited edition and a great tale to tell customers at the Oliver Conquest, they are very surprised to be able to drink it in a G&T for only £5.50!
The book ends with a list of bars where you can get some classic gin cocktails, shops to source ingredients & barware and distilleries that you can visit – basically everything needed for the gin enthusiast!
Despite the one glaring omission – The Oliver Conquest isn’t on the gin bar list, with 230+ gins it has the credentials to be there! – this is a great book for anyone wanting to know more about gin and discover both classic bars and new suggestions. There are also loads of blogs and websites dedicated to gin, gin & cocktail bars, if you want to keep your finger on the gin pulse!
You can order the book on Amazon.
