Brunch @ COUNTER *now closed*

Last Sunday I had the delight of checking out the brunch offering at COUNTER in Vauxhall with the Zomato ladies, Alexandra and Sheepa and some fellow bloggers.

Tucked under the railway line right by the station entrance COUNTER has a great modern 1960’s decoration and was popular for brunch on a Sunday afternoon, quickly filling up after midday.

Our special Zomato set up – the zingy orange really pops with the otherwise muted colours.

Starting at the beginning I had to order coffee – and wow what I got was a slap in the face of caffeine – proper strong coffee here. This was a definite plus after burning the candle at both ends for London Cocktail Week!

But then as it was brunch we had to try the other drinks – Bellinis for the drinkers and smoothies for the non drinkers (or hungover – OK I was in denial and drinking anyway….)

Pour in fresh peach purée, add a little prosecco and jooze it up (technical term!), top up with more prosecco and garnish with a peach slice! Fun and tasty too.

Then we had to move on to the serious business – the food….

The menu is split into 3 key sections: sweet, savoury and lunchy. By which I mean ‘French toast’ breakfast type, ‘eggs savoury’ breakfast type or ‘Sunday’ lunch type. There are also side dishes for those that can’t decide what to stick to, or are just feeling piggy!

I don’t think anyone ordered off the lunchy bit of the menu – we all stuck with breakfast of some type of other – after all that’s what brunch is all about!

Savoury eggs:

Truffled eggs, one of the decadent veggies options. They also do a complete fry up served in the same pans served to your table – cute!

Crab cake with artichoke, smoked salmon and poached egg. If you want to try something more than the usual eggs benedict – go for this!

Mac and cheese balls with bacon – not the prettiest to look at but tasty – I would have preferred more bacon (you can never have too much bacon!)

Sweet breakfast:

Banana stuffed French toast with crispy bacon & maple syrup – nom!! The French toast also comes in a vegetarian version with apple, cinnamon and candied walnuts. It’s magic how they stuff the one thick slice of brioche!

A Vauxhall Vesper – refreshingly orange for a martini – as recommended by Matt for the discerning gin lover (i.e. me!)

Then as we had been at COUNTER for so long we decided that it would be rude not to check out the desserts – so back to sweet:

Fried apple pie – more like a rethink of a tarte tatin a la mode

Peanut butter parfait – Alexandra was raving about this one!

And the chocolate tart – you always have to have a chocolate option

Goodie bags with carrot and walnut cake – the girls at London Cocktail Week enjoyed it when I popped by after brunch!

Full disclaimer – my brunch and drinks were paid for by Zomato, however I would definitely recommend COUNTER and it’s perfect for an Autumnal brunch with a Sunday walk by the river!

Just a 15 minute stroll up the river from Vauxhall…. Glorious!
