Katie’s top gins of 2018

Inspired by Gin a Ding Ding’s #GinadayMay hashtag challenge, I’ve finally gotten around to publishing my top gins of 2018 (a little delayed!)… Anyway, time to catch up now. Read on to see what were my #favourites out of the new gins I tried in 2018 (and I tried a LOT). Plus if you keep going to the bottom of the post you can see how you might be able to win one of the bottles I have to give away:

Bottles of Bold St Chai, Tarsier and Dartmouth English gins

You could win these gins!

*Full disclosure, I was gifted the competition bottles, this post is not affiliated with any of the mentioned brands, although I may have had previous collaborations with them*

Katie’s top gins of 2018 + give away!

Brentingby

Brentingby launched in August 2018. The brainchild of South African Bruce Midgely, Brentingby has been crafted with the guidance of Tanqueray master distiller Tom Nichol. As such it’s a beautiful drop of London Dry gin, with Tom’s signature whole grapefruit as the lead citrus. This is backed up with classic gin botanicals and a couple of different ones – local birch and floral hibiscus.

Another one of my top new gins from 2018 – @brentingbygin . Apart from the fabulous shiny shiny bottle, the contents are pretty good too! . With zesty citrus from whole grapefruit & coriander seed, and piney notes from the juniper this gin is refreshing on the nose and full of flavour. . The addition of hibiscus is a nod to maker Bruce Midgely’s South African background and is used to full effect to colour the pink version of the gin. #whatskatiedoingblog #topginsof2018 #ginspiration #gin #brentingbygin #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #happyhour #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #ginblogger #englishgin #drinkup #feedfeed #reginned

It also doesn’t hurt that the bottle is simply bloody gorgeous! The best way to highlight the quality of the gin inside – all aspects of this brand have been well thought through.

Pimp any gin with @ginfusion_uk garnishes! . Their tropical garnish mix will turn any gin pink, but it’s a perfect complement to @brentingbygin as it contains the same botanical included in the gin – hibiscus! . A perfect to extend your gin collection at home without adding more bottles! Or a great stocking filler for the gin lover in your life who already has everything . ❓would you try @ginfusion_uk ❓ . #ginfusion #whatskatiedoingblog #gin #gingarnish #brentingbygin #ginspiration #❤️gin #ginlush #gintasting #gintime #ginstagram #ginforthewin #ginformation #ginoclock #gintastic #whynotgin #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #happyhour #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #booze

Hitting the gin market as fully formed and with a well executed plan, Bruce already has two new releases:  Pink gin, that is nothing like a sweet liqueur, but instead uses the infusion of those hibiscus flowers to create a great colour; and Brentingby Black, which instead takes a citrus and spice route to a different, but complementary flavour profile.

Something tells me that Bruce won’t stop there either, so this is definitely one to watch…

Twelve Keys

Made by husband and wife team, Matt & Alex, Twelve Keys entered the UK market last year with a lot of forethought into the whole brand. Including unusual botanicals such as fig, quince, caraway, gentian and frankincense, their signature serve is with fig and coffee beans! I tried their first recipe at Junipalooza and I’ve since had the chance to try their refreshed recipe, which tweaks the same botanicals for a more refined gin.

Twelve Keys bottles at Junipalooza

I first saw and tasted Twelve Keys at Junipalooza

Keep your eyes peeled for their signature cocktail serves – they started with a superb white negroni and aim to have 12 to match their name.

Gower Gin

I first tasted Gower gin at Junipalooza where I met Sian and Andrew Brooks. Complete with matching stripey rugby tops they are very proudly Welsh and make gins that reflect the terroir of the Gower peninsula.

Currently they have three different gins out – Gwyr, Pinwydd and Gwyr: Rhosili. I’ve only tried their flagship Gwyr and Pinwydd, so I’m looking forward to seeing what the inspiration of Dylan Thomas means in gin form!

Edit: this is an AD under the UK regulations as I was gifted the gin!!! Another contender for my top gins from 2018 is @thegowergincompany – pictured is their Pinwynd in a classic negroni – I first tasted their gin at @junipalooza and have been following them keenly! . Gwyr is based on the Gower peninsula in Wales and aim to harness the flavours of their local environment, including the freshness of the sea, 2 types of fennel and local herbs . Their Pinwynd edition is the first if their seasonal range and includes foraged pine tips from North Gower, orange, cranberries and pink peppercorns – I can attest this is fab in a negroni!! ?? . #whatskatiedoingblog #topginsof2018 #2018topgin #gin #ginspiration #gincocktails #negroni #pinwynd #gowergin #gowergincompany #junipalooza #welshgin #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #booze #feedfeed #wales

Woodlab

Woodlab distillery launched 3 products last year. Their classic gin Symphonia number 1, an apple variation, Symphonia number 2 and a fruit cup. Read my recent interview with distiller Ric:

Hidden Curiosities

Jenny has created not one, but two gins now. Along with her original Hidden Curiosities gin, she’s made the new Aranami. At 59% with 23 intriguing botanicals inspired by Japan, it’s a beauty of a gin. So if you saw Hidden Curiosities at last year’s Junipalooza, you now have a reason to visit them again this year!

Renegade Gin

OK I need to admit that I love to drink this gin neat. Having also tried their Baller vodka at the Gin to My Tonic show in Glasgow, I think I could drink that neat too…. This is surely the sign of a hardcore drinker.. I mean amazing quality spirit!

View this post on Instagram

I’ve decided to start #ginuary2019 with a round up of some of my favourite new gins. . Starting today with @renegadegin – one of my favourite new gins of 2018 . Shot onsite at their Dog Dayz distillery open day this summer – great branding for a great product, I see them going far with these grain to glass products (yes they make their own base spirit), based in Battersea, London (but apparently that’s not the dog link! ?) . It’s great being able to visit the distillery and meet the makers – Braden and Katherine. Even better is the gin and their sloe gin is pretty lush too. Created as a juniper forward ‘sessionable’ gin – this is one you’ll want to drink all night . #ginuary #renegadegin #ginandtonic #gintasting #whatskatiedoingblog #ginspiration #londongin #newgin #dogdayz #doghousedistillery #battersea #london?? #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #happyhour #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #booze

Fresh Rain gin from Boutiquey Gin Co

Boutiquey are known for pushing the boundaries in everything they do and with this range they focused on evocative scents. The way they have gone about to capture the essence and smell of fresh rain is so interesting. Think super geeky, isolating chemical compounds of flavours and analysing botanicals to find those that contain the ones they wanted. The result was four very different aroma lead gins, but my favourite is the Fresh Rain. This has a fabulous mouth feel and I desperately want to try it in a martini as I think it would be cracking!

View this post on Instagram

Next up on my #ginuary list of the best of new 2018 gins is Fresh Rain gin from @boutiqueygin . That Boutique-y Gin’s Olfactor-y range was launched Autumn 2018 and is exclusively stocked in @harveynichols. The range is inspired by perfumes and includes four different gins with different smells and flavours – really pushing the boundaries of what a gin is. . Fresh Rain gin is my favourite of the four as it has a fabulous mouth feel as well as having a unique smell and taste that aims to simulate Fresh Rain landing on dry soil – or petrichor . This ‘smell/flavour’ was created by distilling beetroot to get a natural source of geosmin – which mimics earthy scents. The edition of distilled edible Bentonite clay adds to the amazing light mouthfeel. . I really want to try this gin in a martini – which would light and refreshingly delicious! ?? so if anyone wants to buy me a bottle – feel free! ?? . #olfactorygin #freshraingin #boutiqueygin #boutiqueygincompany #whatskatiedoingblog #ginspiration #gintasting #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #happyhour #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #booze #feedfeed #harveynichols #ginlaunch

Campfire Gin

Campfire were the well deserved winners of the World’s Best Martini this year. A cocktail that really showcases a gin, theirs really shone through. With a full range including a Navy strength and a Cask aged gin, I recommend that you check them out.

Tuesday night I was mainly drinking martinis, as you do!???? . The reason for this Tuesday night madness was the Worlds Best Martini Challenge – the final which was held yesterday at @100wardourst . The winner was also my favourite @campfiregin dry gin martini with *orange* ? peel flowers soaked in a sweet vermouth. The mixture of vermouths in an otherwise dry martini and carefully controlled dilution, made this tasty and complex ??. . Well done Ben and Kate! Campfire is also one of my picks for new gins in 2018 – their London Dry, Navy Strength and Cask Aged gins have all won medals too! . #worldsbestmartini @wbmchallenge #wbmchallenge #martinimadness #martini? #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #happyhour #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #booze #feedfeed #campfiregin #ginspiration #shakennotstirred

Turncoat

I first tried Turncoat gin at the Gin to My Tonic Show in Liverpool last year. Then I ran into them again at Catford Gin festival, where distiller Terry had come up with another gin to add to the collection! With Terry’s background in craft brewing, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he is bringing the same inventiveness to the spirit world. Alongside their London Dry gin and vodka, sit Cascade gin – made with Cascade hops, Dragon Tears – made in collusion with Manchester’s Blackjack Brewery, and Bold St Chai, a special edition created with LEAF tea merchants, wonderfully spiced. The addition of their own distilled bitters (to make a perfect Pink Gin cocktail) should be no surprise to anyone.

[AD – gifted + collab*] Another of my top gins for 2018 is @weareturncoat . Whilst @weareturncoat have been operating since 2017, they were new to me in 2018! I first tried them as one of the local gins at @the_gin_to_my_tonic_show in Liverpool, where the lovely Jasmine took me through their range. . Their London Dry Gin is a great juniper forward gin, I got notes of mint when tasting, but there is also nuttiness from the Black Walnut leaf that is one of 11 botanicals . I also tried their Cascade gin – named after the hops and dry & earthy with lots of cardamom; Dragon Tears – using the buds of jasmine tea, sweet & floral (but not too sweet!); Our Man in Sicily – a Sicilian lemon inspired gin, that isn’t a slap in the face with citrus, but well balanced. . I tried their Bold Street Chai @catfordginfest too – a collaboration with tea merchants @leafonboldst using their chai leaf with ginger and cubeb berry for a great spiced gin . @weareturncoat is one to watch for constant innovation in 2019 – perhaps something that comes from Terry’s background in craft brewing?! . * my entries to @the_gin_to_my_tonic_show & @catfordginfest were free in return for coverage of the show & I received a bottle of @weareturncoat Bold Street Chai as a gift . #weareturncoat #thegintomytonicshow #liverpoolgin #whatskatiedoingblog #topginsof2018 #boldstchai #ourmaninsicily #londondrygin #cascadegin #dragontearsgin #liverpool?? #ginspiration #❤️gin #ginlush #gintasting #gintime #ginstagram #ginforthewin #ginformation #ginoclock #gintastic #whynotgin #instadrinks #drinkstagram #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #booze #feedfeed

The Teasmith

This Scottish gin is made with tea as a key botanical – hence the name. I hadn’t really appreciated the Scottish link with tea plantations before delving into their background, then suddenly it was being referenced in a lot of historical novels I was reading! This gin is a lovely contemporary style gin made with great attention to detail. All the little things have been looked into and no detail unconsidered. So what you get is a brilliant package, of taste and class, with a stunning bottle.

Read my full review, tasting notes & serving suggestions for the Teasmith

[AD – previous collaboration] I have to recommend both @the_teasmith gin and @pickeringsgin pink grapefruit and lemongrass liqueur as top gin contenders for 2018 (ok, ok, liqueur isn’t a gin – but it’s a gin product!). . @the_teasmith gin is a lovely contemporary style gin, made with tea leaves as the name suggests. I didn’t know before trying this about the link between Aberdeenshire in Scotland and tea! . The Pickering’s liqueur I came across whilst at @edfringe – I visited the @pickeringsgin distillery and tasted everything! This liqueur is full of flavours I love and is a great addition to cocktails . *Disclosure: I’ve done a paid promotion for @the_teasmith within the last year, this post isn’t part of it @pickeringsgin visit and products were paid for by me . #whatskatiedoingblog #topginsof2018 #theteasmithgin #scottishgin #pickeringsgin #ginliqueur #pinkgrapefruitandlemongrassliqueur #pickeringsliqueur #gin #ginspiration #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #instadrinks #drinkstagram #spiritsblogger #drinkup #feedfeed #aberdeenshire #scotland #edinburgh

Tarsier South East Asian Gin

I met Sherwin and Tim first at the Liverpool Gin to My Tonic show and was instantly drawn to their unique label. The Tarsier is the cute little primate on the bottle and they donate 10% of their profits to support Tarsier conservation. The gin was developed after they backpacked around South East Asia together and then wanted to create something to reflect the flavours they tasted out there. This resulted in a combination of Cambodian Kampot pepper, Philippino Calamansi (a citrus fruit), Thai Sweet Basil and Galangal, to create an exotic and unique gin.

View this post on Instagram

[AD – gifted] Next up on my top gins from 2018 is this new one @tarsierspirit . Inspired by travelling around South East Asia, founders Sherwin, Neil and Tim, have incorporated ingredients from each of the countries they travelled in. . These include Vietnamese aromatic notes from galangal, Thai herbs – sweet Thai basil, Cambodian spices – including the famous Kampot Pepper, and Philippine Calamansi for the citrus notes (swipe ⬅️ to see this unusual fruit – a mix between orange and lemon/lime) . On the nose you smell the juniper and dry spice notes. To taste the spices come through with a natural sweetness – easy to drink on the rocks or in one of their South East Asian cocktails . Distilled in Manchester they use frozen Calamansi to ensure the freshness of the fruit shipped from the Philippines. Of course we shouldn’t miss the other Filipino influence – the name! . Tarsier is named after the worlds smallest primate with the big eyes that you see on the label. 10% off all profits is donated to conserving this cute animal ?? . They’ve recently changed the bottle and label to make it stand out on the back bar and have big plans to develop a range of South East Asian drinks, keep your eyes peeled for jackfruit, kaffir lime and mangosteen making an appearance in your drink soon! . I tasted @tarsierspirit at @the_gin_to_my_tonic_show in Liverpool, where I had free entry . #tarsierspirit #southeastasiangin #southeastasianinspiration #whatskatiedoingblog #gin #ginspiration #thegintomytonicshow #❤️gin #ginlush #gintasting #gintime #ginstagram #ginforthewin #ginformation #ginoclock #gintastic #whynotgin #imbibegram #imbibe #instacocktail #instadrinks #womenwhodrink #spirits #spiritsblogger #drinkup #feedfeed #topginsof2018

With such a wealth of flavours at their disposal from South East Asia, I’m sure that they will be creating more unique gins in the future! At the moment, I’m enjoying the various cocktails inspired from Sherwin’s background working for Diageo and Funkin.

Hapusa

For me Hapusa was one of the highlights of Junipalooza 2018’s newcomers zone! It’s fab to see gin being made in a country that doesn’t have much domestically made gin (or at least it didn’t when they started). Hapusa is an Indian gin, made with traditional spices that would be found in most Indian kitchens, as well as Himalayan juniper berries. If you can find it, then you need to try it! Nao Spirits are back at Junipalooza this year with their London Dry gin, Greater Than, which I saw behind the bar at several places in Khan Market in Delhi recently.

View this post on Instagram

[AD – prior collab*] Another contender for top gin of 2018 is @hapusagin . It was great to try this gin at the newcomers stand @junipalooza last year and they will be back for 2019! . Made with Himalayan juniper, fresh turmeric root, mango, ginger, cardamom, coriander, limes and almonds, Hapusa is truly representative of Indian flavours, whilst keeping the core juniper all the way through the spice notes. It’s also fitting that I’ve just booked a trip to India this Spring! . ❓will you be searching out Hapusa at Junipalooza this year❓ . *prior collab with @junipalooza not Hapusa! . #hapusa #hapusagin #indiangin #junipalooza #junipaloozalondon #topginsof2018 #whatskatiedoingblog #ginspiration #❤️gin #ginlush #gintasting #gintime #ginstagram #ginforthewin #ginformation #ginoclock #gintastic #whynotgin #imbibegram #imbibe #instadrinks #drinkstagram #womenwhodrink #spiritsblogger #drinkup #feedfeed

Dartmouth English Gin

When I first tasted Dartmouth English Gin I didn’t know what I was tasting. That’s because I was one of a panel of judges at the Craft Distilling Expo and all the tasting is performed blind. So when I realised Dartmouth had won Classic Gin of Year I was thrilled for them!

2 bottles of Dartmouth gin with their blue and copper foil labels

The classic blue and foil label of Dartmouth gin

They’ve since won a whole host more awards and medals for this great gin. Made with herbal notes complementing the juniper, layers of floral and citrus, it’s distilled slowly to give an amazingly smooth mouthfeel. Whilst lovely to drink neat, it also makes for some great cocktails too. If you prefer a classic style gin, then I recommend you check this one out.

Tappers Gin

I first tried the Tapper’s range at the Catford Gin Festival, where I met Steve and his Mum Sue, who remain social media friends. As a small family business, Tappers make their compound gin at home by the seaside in West Kirby, Wirral, near Liverpool. It’s truly small batch, with only 40 bottles being made at a time. Their signature gin is their award winning Darkside, named after what the Liverpudlian day tripper’s called the Wirral on the other side of the River Mersey. They use local botanicals, including a taste of the seaside with red clover, chickweed and foraged sea beet, infused with five other botanicals. The result is a warming herbal gin that’s smooth and with a dry finish.

Summer Fruit Pudding, fruit cup from Tappers Gin

The essence of British Summer!

But they haven’t stop there. I also tried their Hydropathic Pudding – a gin based fruit cup that really reminded me of my Mum’s Summer Pudding (she’s also a Sue.. co-incidence?!) They produce seasonal gins, as well as limited editions, including Eggcentric – layered with cacao, vanilla and carob for a delightful chocolatey number. I nabbed a bottle of this quickly and they are currently sold out – so if you spot one of the limited edition Tappers, I suggest you buy it!

They also have something else up their sleeve from the look of their website, so keep your eyes peeled!
