Continuing the Camden Brunch theme, Catherine, Laura and I met Arfan at Caravan in Granary Square Kings Cross to try it out.
Laura and I walked down the canal from Camden Road – a nice walk along the canal and not far for us to go. I’ve been to Granary Square before – for KERB and also to take advantage of the soft opening of Dishoom :), but never made it into Caravan.
Caravan is in a large warehouse space with a bar area, tables and even an area where they roast their own coffee.
We got there about 12.30 and there was a queue of people waiting for tables for brunch/lunch – we were lucky enough to snag some stools at the bar and the wait was less than the 45 minutes we were originally told.
On our stools we had the perfect vantage point to order coffees at the bar and a savoury muffin to keep super runner Catherine going for half an hour. They have a large selection of freshly made cake, pastries and savoury goods on display for you to choose from.
When we sat down we ordered some cocktails – bellinis and something with gin for me, and a beer for Arfan. The brunch menu is amazing – loads of choice and really interesting concoctions, not your bog standard eggs and fry up here! (Although you could probably order that if you wanted!)
We tried a few different choices:
Baked eggs with merguez sausages – tasty! The spicey sausages and tomato sauce go so well with the eggs, could have done with more sourdough to mop it up though!
The cured salmon with beetroot – I think Arfan was disappointed even though the waitress warned him and advised a side too.
Kimchi pancake with fried egg and pork belly – my favourite 🙂 The pork belly was perfect, the kimchi pancake not quite as I imagined – it was like a frittata of kimchi and not too spicy, but great with the egg, pork and sauce.
During the summer Gramary Square is a great place to hangout, the day sees hordes of screaming kids running through the fountains and in the evening you can control the fountains with your smart phone, playing old school computer games like Pacman, so perfect for kids of all ages!
